EFSUMB endorsed course

What does it mean?

An ultrasound training programme that meets the educational and curriculum standards set by the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (EFSUMB).

Why it matters

  • Standardised quality: the course follows EFSUMB’s official guidelines and core curricula for medical ultrasound practice across Europe.
  • Competency levels: the course is structured around EFSUMB’s tiered training framework:
    • Level 1: basic, independent diagnostic scanning and essential procedures.
    • Level 2: more advanced imaging, specialised evaluations, or ultrasound-guided interventions.
    • Level 3: high-level, tertiary referral practice, research and teaching.
  • Official recognition: attending an EFSUMB-endorsed or recommended course helps clinicians build a recognised theoretical and practical foundation, which often counts toward continuing professional development (CPD) or formal national and international recognition.

Target audience

This intensive course is specifically designed for medical professionals looking to master head and neck US and US guided interventions. It is primarily intended for:

  • Radiology registrars and fellows, particularly those with a dedicated subspecialty interest in H&N imaging.
  • Consultant radiologists wishing to build confidence and advance their current H&N ultrasound skills.
  • Sonographers looking to upskill in order to perform comprehensive H&N scans and assist with or perform image-guided sampling.

In addition, specialty practitioners and surgical trainees, including ENT, maxillofacial and endocrine surgery trainees, may also find it useful depending on their specific clinical scope of practice.

Prerequisites

To maximise the educational value of this advanced course, a basic and foundational knowledge of ultrasound principles and techniques is considered essential.

What you will learn

  • A systematic approach to the scanning techniques used in head and neck ultrasound.
  • Neck anatomy, anatomical landmarks and their associated pathologies.
  • How to run a “One Stop Clinic” for neck lumps.
  • Sampling techniques, including FNA and core biopsy, and how to improve sample adequacy.
  • Overview and introduction to advanced techniques.

Course format

The course is designed and delivered by head and neck radiologists and a multidisciplinary consultant panel. Teaching combines interactive lectures with small group hands-on scanning and intervention workshops, so delegates practise the techniques they learn.

  • Interactive lectures on neck anatomical landmarks, scanning techniques and pathologies.
  • Small group, hands-on scanning workshops.
  • Hands-on intervention workshops with skill stations for FNA, core biopsy and slide preparation using anatomical models.
  • Multidisciplinary panel discussions and Q&A with experienced consultants.
  • Introduction and overview of advanced techniques.
